Nano electronics: from the material to the devices and applications

Date of the sessions: 21st May 2021 – 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2PM to 4 PM

Training content: History and Basics principles of the Synchrotron and neutrons radiations and their interactions with

the matter. Introduction to some of the specific neutrons and X-ray techniques used to:

  • Strain measurements, and crystal failure analysis
  • Surfaces and interfaces properties
  • Imaging
  • Chemical characterisation
  • Ionizing irradiations effects on the component’s reliability (aerospace and land-based applications)

Illustrations with case studies done by Nano electronics lab, on actual research topics.

Program:

. 9:00 AM – 10:20 AM Lecture session about the X-ray synchrotron techniques applied to nanoelectronics by Dr. Ennio Capria

. 10:40 AM – 12:00 AM Lecture session about the neutrons techniques applied to nanoelectronics by Dr. Manon Letiche.

. 12:00 AM – 1 PM Virtual tour of both institutes ESRF and ILL

. 2 PM – 4 PM Join practical training: From the issue to proposal submission. The group will be split into working group of 8 students each one working on an industrial case study (proposed by the teaching staff or brought by the students). This activity aims to lead the students to develop a scientific reasoning to answer their issue.

              1/ Correctly understand the issue.

2/ Justify why conventional techniques can’t solve it.

3/ Identify what X-ray synchrotron and/or neutron technique is necessary.

              4/ Write a proposal
