The French Ministry of Higher Education and Research uses certain social criteria to award grants to French citizens and some international students - for example, students residing in France for more than two years whose residence for tax purposes is situated in France. The ministry also finances the “doctoral contracts” administered by the doctoral departments.

Grants based on social criteria To be awarded such a grant, students have to submit a Dossier social étudiant (a form through which student applies for both a grant based on social criteria and admission in a public student dormitory). Some conditions are required:
  • French nationality or parents living in France for over two years
  • Being less than 26 when first application
  • A level required
  • Habilitated degree
  • Increasing studies level.

Grants based on educational criteria

They are awarded by university's directors and include Master's grants. They are awarded for one academic year and their renewal has to be submitted every year.
